Family Tree – Chart Your Family History

September 13th, 2009 -- Posted in Chart Music | No Comments »

Have you ever wondered if you’ve come from royalty? Or maybe you’ve just heard time and again from your old Aunt Gertrude that you look just like your great-grandmother. It sparks your interest, doesn’t it? Nowadays, there’s a new growing trend to discover your own story — where you’ve come from, if you have any long-lost relatives, and even to discover old family stories that have been buried along with your ancestors. With these discoveries brings a wonderful gift to give to your posterity. It can also give one a sense of belonging — especially if there is little or no family still around. To delve into something like this may seem overwhelming and not knowing where to start can be a huge stumbling block. Building a family tree to organize your family history is the easiest place to start, but let’s go over some key points first.

Let’s define what a Family Tree even is. A family tree is a chart that shows family connections. So basically, it’s a genealogical record of your ancestors. It will usually contain the family members’ names, birth dates, death dates (if applicable), and the countries or states where they’ve lived. Each person in this chart is connected to the other people in the chart via lines (thus the tree visual). These lines or connections lead to anyone that is connected to them through a familial relationship whether by blood or marriage. How do I go about drawing a Family Tree? We’ve moved ahead over the years, and no longer do you have to come up with this from scratch — there are numerous resources. You can get a family tree template, where you simply fill in the names and dates. Usually these templates will give directions so you know where and what to fill in. These templates are easy to find and not very expensive. Check out bookstores or office supply stores. I’ve also seen them at scrapbooking stores. There are also some web sites set up that sell all kinds of genealogical supplies. Another option is to download a family tree chart. You add names and dates all electronically and it’s usually very simple to see exactly what information is missing. This way can also enable you to complete everything over the internet so you can email relatives all the information you’ve accumulated. What about information to put in the Family Tree? So you know your grandma and great-grandpa’s name, but you can’t remember your great-uncle’s name. The internet is an incredible tool for us. You can do genealogical searches enabling you to look through information-filled family history databases, where many of the connections are right there.

If this is a hobby that fascinates you, then get started — the resources are all out there!

Free Printable Chore Chart – The ABC’s For Easy Success

June 10th, 2009 -- Posted in Chart Music | No Comments »

Have you ever found a free printable chore chart and tried to use it? Then you know you need to do more than print it out and post it on your fridge in order for it to work. Here are the easy ABC’s of successful chore chart usage.

A. Assign and Affirm.

– Whether you give everyone their own chore chart or use a master chart, personalize your chart system to help your team ‘own’ their jobs. Add names to your charts and let your kids decorate them. It’s just one way to get them excited and on board.

– Make sure everyone gets chores that are age and ability appropriate. Likewise assign more challenging tasks as your kids grow up. Running a household means there is a never-ending stream of tasks to get done and your kids will need to know how to do all of them when they hit adulthood.

– Appreciate your kids and instill confidence in them. Praise their efforts even when you feel like doing the job over again yourself. Explain they will need to practice to learn how to do a job efficiently and effectively.

B. Build expectations.

– Put specifics on your chore chart. “Clean bathroom sink, mirror, toilet and tub” will get better results than “clean bathroom”.

– Go a step further than just writing specifics on the chart itself. Train your young workers to show them EXACTLY what ‘clean’ looks like. Demonstrate your specific standards and how to achieve them. Be sure and provide the tools necessary to get the job done right. Go over any safety issues carefully.

– Explain how much time a standard job will take. If it takes YOU thirty minutes to adequately vacuum the house, how can your little novice do the same quality of work in five minutes? When a child knows that he or she must devote a certain amount of time to a task, they will often put more muscle behind their actions.

C. Coach and Celebrate.

– Train your workers by working alongside them, especially the first few times. Consider this on-the-job training…because it is! Even more important, it’s family time. Doing chores together is a wonderful way to chat with your kids about what’s going on in their lives. You’ll get better attitudes, too, when they understand they are part of a team…not just the unpaid help.

– Be consistent in your standards. If you let standards slide because you don’t want to provoke an argument, there’s no way you can expect a terrific job the night before guests arrive. Stick to your standards from the beginning and you’ll find your need to nag will decrease once your trainees know you mean business.

– Do you enjoy being rewarded? So does your chore chart team. Be creative with your celebrations. A family game night is a great prize for a week of well-done chores with little or no reminding. Another great idea is a favorite meal prepared…as a family. A super prize is a bit of time off from chores (that will spur real competition among your workers). Who doesn’t love a vacation?

Using a chore chart can be a great way to get your household organized. But only if you know the secrets to success. (For more tips and a free printable chore chart, please see the author’s resource box at the end of this article.) If you can be patient in the short term, you will see excellent results in the long term with this simple tool and easy guidelines that have been successfully used by many, many families for years.

Your Family Tree – Get Ancestors Organized For Research With a 5 Generation Chart Master List

February 5th, 2009 -- Posted in Chart Music | No Comments »

Have you realized that you need to have some organization techniques to manage your ancestors? Your family tree can become confusing and/or your research strategies become random, rather than focused, when you do not have some kind of Master List. Here is how to use a 4 or 5-generation-chart for your research.

In this chart, you fill in the first line on the extreme left side with your name and details. I will assume that you will be the #1 person. However, if you wish, you might use your mother as the first person, or your father, or one of your grandparents as the first person. Regardless of whom you start with, you will fill in the known and estimated dates and places of their birth, marriage, death, burial. Then you move on to the right, filling in the name of their parents, and their details. Always use the maiden name of the women in your tree, if known to you. Repeat with each person – move to the right again, with their parents and their details. In this way you will end up with 32 different surnames on the extreme right side of your chart, of a 5-generation form.

Some people color-code the father’s side of the family one color, and mother’s side a second color as a way to help keep the surname lines separated clearly. Of course, you also have numbers for each person since ancestor charts such as these always have a unique number printed for every individual. You are #1; your Father will be written on the top as #2, Mother below as #3; Father’s Father on top (one column over) as #4, Father’s Mother just below as #5, and so on. This is a standardized method of numbering ancestors in this “pedigree” format for recording your family and details.

You may find you are able to go back 6 or 8 or more generations, but the chart only goes to 5 generations. How to go further back than that? If the 5th generation ancestor on your chart is #32 (an example only), then a second chart will start with #32 in the #1 position, and you will note that information on the new chart. At that point, this second chart will be all about #32’s Father, Mother, and their parents. You may be able to only fill in 2 generations before you are blocked by your lack of knowledge. For other ancestors, there may be significant research done in the past which details the lives of their parents and more ancestors. This is particularly true if you find that your line comes down from a celebrity or important figure, or a group such as the Mayflower ship passengers, or one particular religious community.

Once you have your 5-generation chart(s) filled out as much as possible, look for gaps in your knowledge. Take another piece of paper for any individual, and write down what you do know. Also write down those details you need to find out. Brainstorm where you may find those details, to the best of your ability. Pick one ancestor to search at a time, or one family group (mother, father, children), and do this preliminary work. I use a highlighter for a family or individual I am researching, and switch to another colour when I am ready to move on to another individual/family. Use a system that works best for you as there is no one best system – we are all so individual.

Start as you mean to continue and write down all the source materials you have that provide proof of details about your ancestors. The best sources are those documents which were made at the time of an event – such as a birth registration or parish register of birth and baptism, or a death registration or burial certificate, or a marriage registration, or other such original event document. If you do not have such proof, what DO you have? Perhaps birth, marriage, or death details are found on military papers, or naturalization records, or on an education record, or a pension application form, or in an obituary published in the local newspaper. Any of these documents may be very useful to help prove details, so add those details right away. Use a guide as to how to write down the document – called how to Cite your Sources.

Writing out your 5-generation chart, you will have a basic Master List of your ancestors, and you can begin to organize your research. Many people begin to search from the people closest to them, moving to generations further away. Others prefer to pick one line only, perhaps their mother’s surname line, and research that as far as possible, then pick another line and do the same. There is no best way to do this, simply look at your list of ancestors and decide where to start. Remember also to look for stories or historical events which may have impacted on your ancestor(s). These personal and social details will enrich your family tree. One person at a time, one detail at a time, you will build a fascinating look into your past.

Guitar – Beyond The Chord Chart

January 6th, 2009 -- Posted in Chart Music | No Comments »

We’ve all been there – soon after we get hold of our first guitar we know that to play anything people are actually going to listen to we need to “learn a few chords”. These first few chords for most beginners end up being the open position chords, down at the first few frets.

Soon, we begin to associate these basic chords with shapes – E, A, D, C and G shapes. These 5 shapes are way more fundamental than we initially think, because once it comes to mastering the dreaded F chord, or more accurately, the “E-shape barre”, we immediately feel liberated – we can now create major and minor chord variations up and down the neck.

Some stop there. Some may even go on to realize the “A shape barre” (based on the A string) can widen our scope of tone and voicing that little bit more. True, these two movable shapes are indeed enough for most of today’s middle-of-the-road rock music. You can write great songs with a mix of the 5 open position shapes, and these two barre shapes, even epics!

But why stop there? Why limit yourself at all? There’s so much more to discover on the fretboard. Different voicings – voicings that can make a chord on its own sound 10 times more intricately lush. The truth is, as guitarists get into their 2nd year of playing, these fixed form chords begin to sound, well…a little dull.

Too many guitarists are missing out on producing music that will astound themselves, let alone others, because of their love affair with the quick-reference chord chart, learning parrot fashion, shrugging off any understanding of “what that chord would sound like voiced…here” and knowing your several options.

You may be thinking “this sounds complicated, where do I go from here? What do I need to learn to be able to think outside the box when it comes to constructing interesting chords?”

Two words that will make some jump into their guitar case – chord theory

Chord theory is a subject area of guitar that doesn’t necessarily have to be pretentious, elitist or just for jazz/classical guitarists. Explained and learned the right way, knowing some basic guitar chord theory can open up a songwriting factory in your head, producing its goods right on your guitar.

There are 5 steps you need to go through to reach your guitar chord nirvana (and I DON’T mean the band!), the first 3 you probably already have…

1) Learn the 5 barre chord shapes (E, A, C, D and G)

2) Learn the major scale in 8 (yes, eight) different positions based around these barre shapes

3) Use your knowledge of the major scale to create triads, 7ths and extended chords in several positions on the fretboard. This is the foundation for building unique and interesting chord voicings.

4) Use your knowledge of chord construction to create unique chord voicings with inversions all over the fretboard.

5) Don’t forget to “float” chords occasionally with open strings.

Once you invest a little of your practice time learning chord theory basics (it doesn’t take long to pick up), you’ll start to investigate the fretboard as second nature. You’ll come up with chord progressions and really use your ears to identify the “right” chord for the change. Your playing will open up to a diverse range of styles.

Most of all though, creating unique original music that is truly “you” won’t be limited by the size of a chord chart – it will only be limited by the 6 strings on your guitar.

A Note on the Pentatonic Scales Chart

November 20th, 2008 -- Posted in Chart Music | No Comments »

If you are seriously into Rock or Blues, or you just want to learn how to play a guitar, you will know all about the pentatonic scales chart. Comprising of only 5 notes, the letter name of each pentatonic scale forms the root note. It is very common for musicians to confuse the minor and the major scales. They tend to overlook a lot of the sounds and patterns by considering the minor pentatonic scales as the best option, and they may get some of the guitar scales wrong. With this in mind let us look at some examples of the pentatonic scales chart.

Basic Notes We begin with the two common pentatonic scale charts, one of the most prevalent scale modes there is. In the E minor pentatonic scales chart, to achieve the minor flavor for the E minor, the note oE is emphasized. Similarly, for the G major pentatonic scale, the emphasis is laid on the G note, which imparts the major sound.

A great feature of these scales charts is that the positions are quite flexible. Let us examine the formations of a pentatonic scale, for example “A”. Here, the pattern for the progression has the basic formations of A (7-9-13) with 4 bars, D (7-9) with 2 bars, A (7-9-13) with 2 bars, E (7-9) with a single bar, D (7-9) with a single bar, A (7-9-13) with another single bar, E (7,9) with 1 bar, and the tonic follows again.

The major and the minor scales often have very similar formations. For example, consider the A major and A minor scales. If you check them in any depth you will discover that their positions are identical!

Some Great Examples I have provided some great numbers that have used the chords from the pentatonic charts. These are great to play and good for learning the pentatonic scales. Take for example the song “Wish You Were Here” by Pink Floyd. Concentrate on the intro of the number and you will feel the difference in the sound produced. “Let It Be” by The Beatles, “Maggie May” by Rod Stewart, “Upside Down” by Jack Johnson, “Better Together” by Jack Johnson, “Yellow Ledbetter” by Pearl Jam, etc are a few more numbers to look into. Practicing these chords can help you a lot with your study of the pentatonic scales chart.

Conclusion The Pentatonic scales chart, like any of the other charts, takes a little application and practice. It is my advice however to ensure that you do persevere with it. It is always a temptation when you learn to play guitar to try and short cut your way to success. This is wrong. Learning to read notes is an asset that will remain with you for the rest of your guitar playing days and is highly recommended on your way to achieving your goals. You can also try learning the guitar by obtaining a cool guitar pictures that will help you visualize the frets and ease your way into this wonderful world.

Basics of Making a Family History Chart – Your Pedigree

October 12th, 2008 -- Posted in Chart Music | No Comments »

Whether you create it for display or simply for your own reference during research, a family history chart is a vital part of any genealogist’s project; creating a chart will organize your family tree into an easy to read format. Consisting of a series of interconnected boxes filled with basic information about each member you have researched in your family. Creating one of your own is an easy and fun part of your project; if your goal is to involve your family in the project, consider recruiting your children to help out with the more artsy side of creating the chart!

Most people would associate the word “pedigree” with the lineage of animals; however, your pedigree is simply the lineage from which you are directly descended. A chart that details your pedigree will start with you and trace your ancestors back from your parents to the earliest relatives that you are able to research. With the pedigree tracing only direct descent, it is the most simple of charts to create.

The pedigree chart is often referred to as a family tree, so named because of the shape formed by the addition of relatives; your details would represent the trunk of the tree, with the name of your ancestors branching out to form a shape resembling a tree. Although there are several additional shapes and types of charts used for tracking genealogy, the family tree is most commonly used because of the ease of creation. Before you get started on creating your family history chart, you should decide whether you want to create one from scratch, or take advantage of one of the many templates available on the internet.

Should you make the decision to use a template, you need only fill in the blank spaces; there are several software programs to help ensure that your family history chart is as complete and well presented as possible. The built-in wizards that the programs offer will walk you through every step in the process.

If your preference is to create your own chart without the aid of software, you will need large surface on which to create it, whether that be paper or poster board, along with pencils (colored pencils too if you wish to get a bit more creative) and a ruler to help you nearly measure and create your straight lines. You can start your chart at the top, the bottom, or the left side of the page; it depends purely on your personal preference. You, and your details, will always be the starting point of your family history chart. Be sure to work, initially, in pencil so that you can easily erase and redo data as you learn new details. If you already know that you are going to create a chart depicting ten generations, then you can carefully measure and space your boxes so that your chart maintains a consistent look to it.

A simple family history chart can be made into a work of art with by incorporating calligraphy or other artistic touches; it is entirely up to you. After all, it’s your pedigree!
