Alzheimer’s and the Benefits of Golden Oldies Music

October 21st, 2008 -- Posted in Golden Oldies | No Comments »

Alzheimer’s and the Benefits of Golden Oldies Music by Brenda Dapkus I wish I had a nickel for every time I’ve heard a caregiver say, “My mom just sits there and stares; she won’t respond to any activity I suggest.” For those who face this challenge, your loved one has probably progressed from late middle to late stage Alzheimer’s Disease. The good news is that music is an activity! When I say music, I’m not talking about Country and Western, Easy Listening, or any other style of music that they listened to long before they developed Alzheimer’s.

They’ve regressed to a much earlier time; a time where the popular songs of the day are songs you might not know. One particular song that comes to mind, and one that my residents loved, is A Bicycle Built For Two. Play that song, or others from that genre, and see if your loved one’s face doesn’t light up. Play that song, and chances are great that you might just see them tap their toes or begin to sing! Friends, I have seen it happen over and over.

Music from their youth can also improve their eating and overall mood. Play that music softly at mealtime, and I believe that it can remind them of being at home with mom and dad — a time that is comforting and makes them feel secure. Music from the good old days is not only an activity, it can also be used as a diversion from behaviors caused from agitations, frustration and loss of control. With some residents, I used a portable CD player, and put headphones on them — instant change in behavior! You might be thinking that you’d like to try this music, but you have no idea what those songs are or if anyone even makes a cd of these songs.

Here is more good news: These songs are not only available on cd, there are several companies that sell them. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to see a smile on the face that is so dear to you?

Basics of Making a Family History Chart – Your Pedigree

October 12th, 2008 -- Posted in Chart Music | No Comments »

Whether you create it for display or simply for your own reference during research, a family history chart is a vital part of any genealogist’s project; creating a chart will organize your family tree into an easy to read format. Consisting of a series of interconnected boxes filled with basic information about each member you have researched in your family. Creating one of your own is an easy and fun part of your project; if your goal is to involve your family in the project, consider recruiting your children to help out with the more artsy side of creating the chart!

Most people would associate the word “pedigree” with the lineage of animals; however, your pedigree is simply the lineage from which you are directly descended. A chart that details your pedigree will start with you and trace your ancestors back from your parents to the earliest relatives that you are able to research. With the pedigree tracing only direct descent, it is the most simple of charts to create.

The pedigree chart is often referred to as a family tree, so named because of the shape formed by the addition of relatives; your details would represent the trunk of the tree, with the name of your ancestors branching out to form a shape resembling a tree. Although there are several additional shapes and types of charts used for tracking genealogy, the family tree is most commonly used because of the ease of creation. Before you get started on creating your family history chart, you should decide whether you want to create one from scratch, or take advantage of one of the many templates available on the internet.

Should you make the decision to use a template, you need only fill in the blank spaces; there are several software programs to help ensure that your family history chart is as complete and well presented as possible. The built-in wizards that the programs offer will walk you through every step in the process.

If your preference is to create your own chart without the aid of software, you will need large surface on which to create it, whether that be paper or poster board, along with pencils (colored pencils too if you wish to get a bit more creative) and a ruler to help you nearly measure and create your straight lines. You can start your chart at the top, the bottom, or the left side of the page; it depends purely on your personal preference. You, and your details, will always be the starting point of your family history chart. Be sure to work, initially, in pencil so that you can easily erase and redo data as you learn new details. If you already know that you are going to create a chart depicting ten generations, then you can carefully measure and space your boxes so that your chart maintains a consistent look to it.

A simple family history chart can be made into a work of art with by incorporating calligraphy or other artistic touches; it is entirely up to you. After all, it’s your pedigree!

Karaoke Lyrics

October 8th, 2008 -- Posted in Karaoke | No Comments »

Song brought a whole new era in human existence, making the expression of many feelings and sentiments possible, enabling communication, and creating a condition in which people could actually sing to the music they heard around them. No one can deny that the charm of a karaoke session is apparent only when all people present know and understand the lyrics. Karaoke lyrics refer to the words the songs, whose tunes are being meted out by the karaoke box.

Generally, karaoke discs come in a combined audio-visual format, in which the music is played on the speaker and the words displayed on a television set. If however, the music system has not been connected to a display unit, the lyrics will not be seen and singers will have to depend on memory for the wording of a song. Moreover, if s singer forgets a few lines or messes up their order, the entire karaoke session can go for a toss. This is mainly why karaoke bars always use large display screen for karaoke lyrics.

When people are unsure of the lyrics, they are generally reluctant to sing. Having a display of karaoke lyrics is generally enough to get them off their chairs and on to the stage. When the karaoke lyrics are not embedded in the CD, they can be downloaded from the Internet. Using the media drives of a personal computer, people can even have a ready-to-use karaoke at home to play and display all karaoke songs. At times, the karaoke lyrics are color coded to depict rose and fall of voice and music. At times, these lyrics are displayed along with the original video of the song, so if people please they can look at the actual singer instead of the one pretending to be it.

Most regular players are not equipped to read lyrics from karaoke CDs since they are not designed to read the coded words. Specialized lyric editors that can read file of all formats and synchronize the karaoke lyrics are preferable to regular music systems.
